TCM Herbal Formulas Recommended by Chinese Health Officials for Treatment of COVID-19 May Provide Relief to those affected by novel Coronavirus By Jing Struve
The Coronavirus has crippled the world. Without a cure, or even definitive treatments for the Coronavirus, countries and individuals are left scrambling for a way to help them defend against the virus. This is what China faced when the virus first appeared in its country. After trying Western medicine, which did not prove to be wholly effective in the midst of the outbreak, China increasingly turned to its traditional remedies. As of late February, more than 85% of all coronavirus patients in China (about 60,000 people) had received herbal remedies alongside mainstream antiviral drugs, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology with many recovering faster.
According to Liú Qīngquán, the director of the Beijing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospitals and a member of the team dispatched to Wuhan, “Outside Hubei, the province hit hardest by the epidemic, about 90% of the patients took TCM remedies at some point and received positive results. After analyzing case reports from different areas, we have reached a conclusion that TCM is able to prevent mild cases from getting worse.”
Increase of interest in the United States in Herbal Medicines
The use of herbal remedies in China has not gone unnoticed in the United States. As many people look for a way to stem the virus and protect themselves, there has been increased demand for ingredients, or anything for that matter, that will help support the immune system and lung health for better preventative treatment and for symptoms when they arise.
New York City acupuncturist and herbalist Clayton Shiu says demand for traditional Chinese remedies has surged at his practice since March 1, the day New York announced its first case of the novel coronavirus. “It was like a light switch was flipped,” said Shiu, who had stocked up and had an ample supply of herbs on hand for his patients.
And last year’s nod from the World Health Organization, when they formally recognized traditional medical therapies such as acupuncture and herbal supplementation medicine – which date back more than 2,500 years, provided more mainstream attention to these ancient practices.
Optimism Surrounding these Herbal Formulas

These herbal formulas, recommended by the Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners in China, may offer some relief for those who want to take a more active role in their own health.

In the time of coronavirus, that is not a small thing, as people are scared and trying to figure out how to find some peace of mind.
