Davos: The fight against cancer

Thursday, 2 December, 2010

Despite the enormous amount of research during the past many decades, cancer remains the leading cause of death in developed countries. The global mortality rate for cancer is expected to increase steadily in the years to come. Research findings have shown that less than 10% of all cancer cases can be attributed to genetic defects of hereditary origin. Majority of cancers develop after a lifetime of exposure to carcinogens found in food, water and air, or through cellular changes associated with ageing, as well as exposure to certain viruses, such as HPV. Certain cancers can be prevented through dietary changes and immunization. Among the phytonutrients found in dietary foods, tocotrienols have been studied extensively, to determine their bioactivity against cancer.

Neptune: What you should know about Krill oil

Thursday, 2 December, 2010

Neptune Technologies & Bioressources Inc. (Neptune) is the pioneer and has always been worldwide leader of the Omega-3 Krill Oil market. In fact, Neptune has single handedly created this market ever since its inception more than a decade ago. Neptune Krill Oil (NKO®) is a whole lipid oil extract of Antarctic krill (Euphausia Superba), a shrimp-like creature inhabiting cold waters of the ocean. Antarctic krill have a life span of about 5 to 10 years and are considered to be a keystone species.

NKO® is distinct from every other marine oil due to the fact that the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, are attached to and carried by phospholipids. Phospholipids are a major component of all biological membranes and contribute to the membrane’s permeability and fluidity. Due to their amphipathic nature, having both lipid soluble and water soluble, phospholipids act as superior delivery systems. Most phospholipids in NKO® also contain choline, a small amine known as a component of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. By weight, NKO® is comprised of at least 30% EPA and DHA and 40% phospholipids. Most of the EPA and DHA in NKO® are structurally intermingled with phospholipid molecules mimicking the way these nutrients occur naturally in cell membranes. In addition, NKO® contains a powerful antioxidant known as astaxanthin which has been shown to be up to 300 times more powerful than Vitamin E. The market has experienced a great increase in consumer awareness about Omega-3 and more recently this awareness has been directed towards the added health benefits from consuming omega-3 from krill oil. To this date NKO® remains to be the only krill oil with clinically proven human health benefits in cardiovascular, cognitive, joints and women’s health.

DKSH: Barley Balance Beta-Glucan

Thursday, 2 December, 2010

Cereal Beta-Glucans from barley and oats are widely associated with an array of healthy benefits, most notably for heart health. Barley and oat have earned official Health Claims in the U.S. and have a similar claim pending in Europe for cholesterol lowering effect. Barley Beta-Glucans have been shown to be potent biological response modifiers affecting multiple systems often associated with chronic health issues. They are especially well suited to the growing trend of products that combine strong consumer appeal, with advanced nutritional profiles and proven health benefits. Barley Balance® is highly enriched in Beta-Glucan, all natural, minimally processed, and is easy to incorporate in a wide range of foods and beverages.

Barley Balance® Beta-Glucans have solid record in clinical trials for both traditional and emerging health benefits. The success shown in trials to reduce blood lipids, key risk factors in heart disease has been reconfirmed by recent studies. Strong evidence has emerged regarding their ability of these Beta-Glucans to modulate blood sugar and glycemic cycles. Recently new scientific evidence has established a direct link between the fermentation of barley Beta-Glucans and the release of hormones that suppress appetite (satiety). This is an important finding for advancing weight control via the diet.
